WIA NATIONAL WOMENS LEADERSHIP SUMMIT GRANT

AIA Miami and the Women in Architecture (WIA) Committee are committed to encouraging emerging professionals to speak up and advocate at an early stage in their architectural careers. We encourage all to be part of WLS National, an intense leadership experience, supporting and empowering women in the design industry.

Understanding that summits and conferences are expensive and financially restraining for some to attend, AIA Miami WIA is supporting our WIA community by assisting grant recipients with the cost to participate in this premier event being held in Chicago, October 8 through 10. One grant up to $1,000 will be awarded each year.

Each grant beneficiary receives AIA Miami community exposure and funds towards attending the AIA National Women’s Leadership Summit. Funds will be in the form of reimbursement for travel and registration: flight, hotel, summit registration receipts.

AIA MIAMI WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE GRANT

Over half of all architecture graduates identify themselves as females and comprise 53% of AXP candidates after graduation. However, less than 23% of all US registered architects are female, a decrease of almost half. To retain more females in our profession, AIA Miami and the Women in Architecture Committee are committed to increasing gender diversity in the profession by encouraging female voices and supporting their continued success early in their architectural careers.

Acknowledging that the pursuit of licensure is costly, the AIA Miami Women in Architecture Grant supports emerging professional women by assisting grant recipients with the cost of architectural licensure. At least 1 grant of up to $3,500 will be awarded annually. The number and value of awards may vary year-to-year based on applications and available funds

Each grant beneficiary receives AIA Miami community exposure, funds towards architectural licensure and complimentary attendance to the annual WIA 8x8x2 and the AIA Design Awards Gala.

BLACK AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP

Architecture plays a vital role in the shaping of our communities, yet the Architecture profession is profoundly lacking in diversity, specifically Black American representation. While Black Americans make up 14% of the US population*, out of almost 120,000 nationally registered architects, they represent a dismal 2.0% with Black American women representing a staggering less than 0.5%. In its continued commitment to actionable accountability through increasing the diversification of the Architectural profession, AIA Miami is offering a scholarship program specific to the advancement of Black Americans into the profession. The scholarship will strategically focus on education, with the aim of providing opportunities to facilitate an increase in the number of black American architecture graduates; with the potential of becoming licensed professionals, a forward step in closing the racial disparity gap within the profession.

The Black American scholarship supports the recruitment and retention of Black Americans in accredited architectural degree programs by assisting scholarship recipients with offsetting the cost of tuition, books, and materials. A minimum of one scholarship valued up to $4,500 will be awarded annually. The number and value of awards may vary year-to-year based on applications and available funds.

Each scholarship recipient receives AIA Miami community exposure, in addition to the funds towards their architecture degree cost.

DIVERSITY IN ARCHITECTURE SCHOLARSHIP

Though things are changing in our industry, the Architecture profession still has a long way to go to meet the ever-increasing diversity of the United States. Out of the almost 120,000 registered architects, only 29% represent racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds; significantly less than the latest census reporting that the US has 42.2% non-white* population.

The high cost of tuition to schools of architecture is one of the many barriers to the profession that minorities face. AIA Miami is committed to providing scholarships strategically focused on education to provide financial help to those students that identify as a racial or ethnic minority, with the aim of providing opportunities to facilitate more diversity of our architecture graduates; with the potential of becoming licensed professionals, a forward step in closing the 13% gap within the profession.

The AIA Miami Diversity scholarship supports the recruitment and retention of minorities in accredited architectural degree programs by assisting scholarship recipients with offsetting the cost of tuition, books, and materials. A minimum of one scholarship valued up to $2,500 will be awarded annually. The number and value of awards may vary year-to-year based on applications and available funds.

Each scholarship recipient receives AIA Miami community exposure, in addition to the funds towards their architecture degree cost.
